Canadian Hemlock

The Canadian Hemlock tree, Tsuga canadensis, is also called Eastern Hemlock or Hemlock spruce. This evergreen conifer is a fast-growing long-lived tree which unlike many trees grows well in shade. It may take 250 to 300 years to reach maturity and may live for 800 years or more. It has a graceful pyramidal form with foliage of spray-like appearance. This stately tree is a very hardy specimen and is an easily transplanted conifer which grows well in a variety of soils. Shelter small plants from drying winds. Potentilla-Coronation Triump

The Coronation Triump Potentilla, Fruticosa coronation triumph, is a beautiful small mounded shrub that is ideal for foundation plantings. This is one of the earliest bloomers with bright yellow flowers. It offers excellent foliage all season long and has one of the longest blooming periods of all Potentillas. It is also deer resistant. This mounded shrub grows 3-4′ high and has a 2-3′ spread. It prefers full sun. They are virtually pest free. The Coronation Triumph has the longest blooming period of all Potentillas. The shrub flowers from early spring to late fall and should be pruned back every 2 to 3 years which will rejuvinate the plant.

Black-Eyed Susan

The Black-Eyed Susan, ‘Rudbeckia hirta is the most drought tolerant of all the Rudbeckias. The beautiful 2 to 4 inch daisy like flowers are adorned with orange/yellow petals. Black-Eyed Susans bloom for a long time, at least 60 days. Even though grown as an annual, Black-Eyed Susan is technically a short-lived perennial and may come back for a second or third year. They reseed themselves for “naturalized” wildflower areas. Black-Eyed Susans bloom for about 8 weeks starting around mid summer. Black-Eyed susan have a slight preference for alkaline soils that are well drained. They are short lived and should be treated as an annual. Plant in early spring 3 to 4 weeks before the last average frost date. Black-Eyed Susan is excellent for wildflower patches. They provide good fall color; when many perennial and annual flowers are beginning to fade, the Black-Eyed Susan look great.

The Green Smoketree, Cotinus coggygria, is a deciduous shrub/tree. The branches are spreading, loose, and as wide as high. Green Smoketrees have bluish green, sometimes yellow like leaves. Their fall color is red-purple. This deciduous tree has showy pubescent pedicels and peduncles of flowers that provide the “smoke” appearance. Smoketrees like sun. Tulip – Fosteriana – Flaming Purissima

The Tulip ‘Flaming Purissima ‘Tulipa fosteriana is a fall planted bulb. These large beautifully shaped flowers stand out from a distance. The flower petals are yellow with a raspberry blush at the top. Plant in drifts for a spectacular display These tulips bloom in early spring for a 3 week period. For the best effects, plant the bulbs in clusters of 5 to 15 bulbs of one variety, or scatter clusters throughout the garden or flower border. Tulips do best in well-drained soil. Bean Pole – Snap – Yard Long

The Bean Pole Liana Yard Long, ‘Phaseolus sesquipedalis has a unique bean/pea flavor of “dow ghok” that is a favorite of the orient. “Good to eat as they are strange to behold”. Liana Yard Long is not really a true bean. Asparagus or Yard Long are grown just like a pole bean, which remind some of asparagus. This plant is easy to grow and almost indestructible. When young, leaves and stems can also be steamed. Yard Long beans are of the sub-tropical origin, but Liana was specifically developed for gardens in North America. The beans are best harvested 12 to 18 inches long, even though they will get 24 inches long. Liana is a pole type plant with vines 6 to 8 feet long. Beautiful purple flowers open in the morning and produce a pair of beans. Plant after the last average frost date. Yard Longs prefer rich, organic, and well drained soil. Asparagus beans should be planted to grow up a trellis, fence, netting, or a teepee.

Geranium – Maverick Violet

The Geranium Maverick Violet , ‘Pelargonium x hortorum is a unique variety that offers beautiful violet flowers. The ‘Maverick series has full flower heads in a mixture of colors including violet. They have zoned foliage on multiple stemmed plants reaching up to 18 inches tall. Geraniums are a favorite bedding and container plant and are grown in almost every region of the country. These plants have succulent leaves and stems and they are commonly called garden geraniums or zonal geraniums. Lettuce – Romaine – Cimmaron

The Lettuce Romaine Cimmaron, ‘Lactuca sativa is an extremely cold and heat hardy romaine. Are you a Caesar salad fan? Cimmaron Romaine is a great Caesar salad lettuce that is very sweet. This romaine is worth trying with its wonderful mix of green, red, and bronze foliage. Cimmaron Romaine is extra cold and heat resistant which adds length to your eating season and the nice sweet taste adds flavor to your salad. Cimmaron Romaine is a stiff ribbed, upright, 10 inch tall lettuce surrounding a tender heart of foliage. Cimmaron can produce lettuce spring through fall with successive plantings. During excessive heat, plant in a cool shady location. Plant in the early spring, 3 to 4 weeks before the last frost. Cimmaron prefers light, fertile, moist, well drained soil. Cleome – Lindy Armstrong

The Cleome Lindy Armstrong, ‘Cleome is a Proven Selection plant with rosey pink flowers. The flowers appear on a compact, thornless plant with phenomenal heat tolerance. The Cleome is commonly known as the spider plant. Lindy Armstrong looks great well into the summer and they do not seem to be bothered by heat or insects. This plant will bloom from summer into early fall and they will do best on well drained soils. Cleome are used for cuttings, beds, and borders. For zones 8-11, this plant can also be a perennial.

Dianthus – Rubys Tuesday

The Dianthus ‘Rubys Tuesday Dianthus Hybrid, has flowers that are a deep red carnation with a sweet fragrance. Their very compact habit and free blooming nature make the ‘Ruby Tuesday’ Dianthus a stand out both in container gardens and perennial borders. Dianthus will bloom from mid summer to early fall. In order for a longer bloom time, deadhead the blooms continuously throughout the summer. Dianthus needs a sunny site with well-drained soil, but will tolerate some shade in the afternoon and humidity. These fragrant, spicy dove like flowers look wonderful as a border plant, rock gardens, along walks or paths, for edging and a definite in cottage gardens. They are especially stunning when paired with white or silver.
