The Pea Shelling Green Arrow, ‘Pisum sativum’, is a very productive, dwarf plant with large 4 inch pods containing 9 to11 wonderful sweet peas per pod. Remember when you were a kid how fun it was to pop open a pod and eat the Peas? As an adult, you will enjoy the wonderful taste of Green Arrow peas and appreciate the dwarf, 2 foot vines for ease of growing. Green Arrow is very disease resistant. The pods are set in pairs atop the plant for easy harvest.Plant in the early spring, as soon as the soil can be worked. In mild climates, plant in the fall for winter harvest. Peas prefer well drained soil. Keep the plants moist but do not get them over watered and soggy. Shelling peas should be harvested when the pods are plump which is about 3 weeks after flowering.

The Siberian Iris Blue Butterfly, ‘Iris’, displays purple blooms with showy white markings. One of the most easily grown Iris, it originated from Northern Asia, and does well in all types of weather conditions. This iris is best grown in a humus soil. Originally available only in violet purple, we now offer many other colors which have the same fine naturalizing habits. Siberian Iris are elegant, easy to grow, and make stunning cut flowers. They thrive in almost every garden environment. They prefer wet soils at the margins of ponds, and are hardy even in the coldest areas. Use to prevent erosion on difficult banks or provide handsome vertical accents in the border. They are graceful when established in broad drifts in an open area. Planted in groups of 3 or more, they will eventually form large clumps.

The Lobelia Crystal Palace, ‘Lobelia erinus’, is a low growing ground cover with intensely rich, deep blue flowers massed over the top of the plant. The foliage is not often seen because of all the flowers which bloom from spring to fall. In mild winter areas, Lobellia will grow and bloom during the winter. The blue flowers are 1/4 inch tubular blooms. The Crystal Palace catches your eye with dazzling, vibrant color whether in a pot, a rock garden, a border, or a basket.Crystal Palace prefers full sun. In extremely hot summer locations, some afternoon shade is recommended. Place the Lobelia in fertile, rich, well drained soils and keep the soil moist. Plant in the spring after the last average frost date or late summer in warmer climates. Lobellia take a long time to germinate, so consider starting them inside.

The Austrian Pine, Pinus nigra, is a densely branched tree producing long dark needles. This evergreen conifer tree thrives in urban locations as well as in windbreaks in more rural settings. It does well in a variety of soils and is very hardy. The spreading branches of a young tree form a pyramidal outline, but at maturity, it sometimes achieves a picturesque flat topped head. This fast growing pine tree makes an attractive Christmas tree when sheared. It will tolerate both limestone or acidic soils, dry rocky locations and windy conditions. Also good for thick screens or windbreaks. For screen, space 6 feet apart. When placed in a good site it should reach 5 ft. in height in 6-7 years starting with a 2 year old seedling.

The Grape Hyacinth ‘Valerie Finnis’, ‘Muscari armeniacum’, a fall planted bulb, produce unassuming flowers that add a sweet, fragrant touch to the spring garden. This plant is named for a notable British gardener, Valerie Finnis, and it is a lightly scented, powder-blue variety that is highly vigorous. The densely clustered flower heads sport multitudes of bell-shaped blooms. The flowers remain beautiful for a long time, and they are very attractive to bees.Grape Hyacinths are a hardy, no-care, mid spring flowering bulb.
