The Lady’s Mantle Thriller, ‘Alchemilla mollis ‘Thriller’, has billowing heads of soft yellow-green star-shaped flowers that are highly prized as a long lasting cut flower. The Lady’s Mantle has a place in every garden. After a rain, attractive foliage holds droplets of water which glisten in the sun. The flowers are star-shaped, 1/8 inch across, and held high above the foliage. They bloom in mid summer for 6 to 10 weeks. The Thriller prefers full sun except in areas that have very hot summer days. In those areas, light shade is recommended. Place the Lady’s Mantle in moist, well drained soils with plenty of organic material. Plant in the spring, 2 weeks before average last frost date. or late summer /early fall 2 months before first frost. The Thriller makes an excellent cut or dried flower and is great for edging in front of tall perennials.

The Portulaca Double Mix, ‘Portulaca grandiflora’, is a great plant for hot, dry summers or warm locations such as parking strips, dry banks, rock gardens, ground cover, and hanging baskets. The Double Mix displays beautiful 1 to 2 inch rose-like, double, brilliantly colored flowers in red, cerise, rose pink, orange, yellow, white, and pastel shades. It blooms from early summer into the fall. The flowers open in the sun and close at night or in the shade.Portulacas prefer a hot location in full sun. The soil should be well drained. They are drought tolerant, so do not over water. These easy to grow plants should be planted after the last average frost date, when the temperatures are warmer. The Double Mix Portulaca are great for ground cover in a hot spot.

The Crocus ‘Yellow’, ‘Crocus flavus’, a fall planted bulb, is a classic golden-yellow variety that sparkles in the spring sunshine before anything else has begun to grow. They are excellent for naturalizing. Plant them in large groups near the front door or at the base of trees. Crocus is easy to grow, and it is native to the hilly meadows and woodlands of Greece, Turkey and the Balkans. Yellow Crocus blooms in early spring and has a 3 week bloom period.Crocuses perform best in a sandy, well-drained soil. Crocus bulbs remaining in the ground will always bloom a bit earlier than the ones planted the previous year. For a massive effect, plant in great sweeps of 100 to 150 bulbs. The Grass Blue Eyed, ‘Sisyrinchium bellum’, is a delightful little Iris relative from the coast of California. The tufts of narrow, upright bluish-green leaves lend a casual air to the flower bed or rock garden. They resemble an ornamental grass until constellations of bluish-purple star shaped flowers appear for several weeks in the spring. The Blue Eyed Grass blooms in early spring through early summer. They may rebloom in the fall.Blue Eyed Grass prefers well drained sandy soils. Plant them in full sun to light shade. They are somewhat drought tolerant but they like evenly moist soil. Plant in the early spring, 2 to 4 weeks before the last average frost date or late summer/early fall. The Luscious Pear, Pyrus ‘Luscious’, produces a medium to small, bright yellow pear that is very juicy and sweet. It blooms in early May, and its fruit ripens mid September. It has medium to small bright yellow fruit with a red blush, and a taste similar to ‘Bartlett’. The Luscious pear tree is globe shaped, with glossy green foliage, and red fall color. It is fireblight resistant and does best with a second pear tree for cross pollination since it is pollen sterile. Very hardy, to -50 degrees with occasional winter injury. Plant about a month after the first killing frost in the fall or about a month before the last killing frost in the spring. Select a planting site that has good air, drainage, full sunlight and deep, well drained soil.
