Dwarf Fleece Flower – Dimity

The Mountain Fleece Dimity, ‘Persicaria affinis a Blooms of Bressingham plant, is a wonderful variety in the Persicaria family. The superb green leaves turn red bronze in the fall and the pink flower spikes appear from summer into autumn. Dimity has a plant height of 6 and a spread of 18-23. The foliage forms a shiny carpet that should not be missed. Dimity should be planted in a full sun area but can tolerate some afternoon shade. Sun will make the foliage look its best. It does need a well-drained area, making sure it is not over watered. Dimity will look great in any perennial garden, in mixed container, woodland edge or near ponds and streams.

The Astilbe Hennie Graafland, Astilbe simplicifolia ‘Hennie Graafland is a colorful feathery flower with light pink blooms and shiny bronze-green foliage. Hennie Graafland is part of the simplicifolia group which are known for their fine textured foilage. The flowers contrast wonderfully with the dark bronze-green foliage. Astilbe Hennie Graafland blooms in mid summer. Astilbes are grown most successfully in rich soil and under partial sun. The biggest key to successful growth of your Astilbes is water. . . . they require a lot of water. The soil must remain moist. If the soil drys out the plant will falter quickly, especially in the sun. Wait to cut the foilage back until spring as that will protect the plant during the winter. Fertilize Astilbes in late spring before the flowers emerge. Astilbes can be used as cut flowers, perennial borders or shade gardens with Hostas and Ferns.

Grape – Frontenac Gris

The Frontenac Gris Grape, Vitis ‘Frontenac Gris is a coppery-peach colored grape with the aroma of peach and apricot. This muscat-like grape is desirable for white wine making, fresh eating and dessert. It is a reliable, outstandingly cold hardy, vigorous, heavy bearing grape. It has a growth habit that is sprawling and has a late harvest season. It is fairly disease resistant, apparently immune to Downy Mildew with only moderate susceptibility to Black Rot and Powdery Mildew. When made as a white, it is crisp and clean and quite delicious. It has also been used to make a good ice-type wine where in the color is more red and the flavor quite intensely cherry. Frontenac Gris appears to be a multi-use wine grape that is an important addition to northern viniculture. This grape tolerates a wide range of soil conditions, but must have good drainage. Grapes are primarily grown for fruit production in home fruit gardens where they provide good ornamental value: bold summer foliage, showy fruit, some fall color and shaggy, twisted trunking and branching often best seen in winter. Grapes need a good support system like fences, walls, trellises, arbors or other structures. The grape vines can be quite attractive year-round and can provide good cover, screening, or shade to areas around the home. Grapes need full sunlight and high temperatures to ripen, so plant on southern slopes, the south side of windbreaks, or the south sides of buildings. The birds love grapes, so be sure to plant some to share.

Mustard – Red Giant

The Mustard Gai Choy Red Giant, ‘Brassica juncea (integlifolia group) is one of the most delicious greens available. It has quite a different flavor than American mustards. Red Giant Mustard is particularly overlooked by American gardeners for spinach and that is a shame. The unique, spicy flavor is excellent in mixed salads or straight as its own salad, wilted like spinach or chard and wrapped in prosciutto, steamed and tossed with sesame oil and soy sauce, or stir fried with ginger, bok, choy, snow peas or chicken. The roots are also edible. Red Giant has slightly savored, dark purplish-red leaves that are thick and tender. Red Giant is particularly tolerant to cold and has wide soil adaptability. The nutritional value of mustard is very high with huge amounts of vitamin A and vitamin C. It also contains iron, phosphorous and some B vitamins. Plant as soon as the soil can be worked in the spring and in mild climates plant in late fall for winter and early spring harvest. Mustard is an excellent container plant and is an attractive variety with a coppery glow in the garden.

The Canadian Hemlock tree, Tsuga canadensis, is also called Eastern Hemlock or Hemlock spruce. This evergreen conifer is a fast-growing long-lived tree which unlike many trees grows well in shade. It may take 250 to 300 years to reach maturity and may live for 800 years or more. It has a graceful pyramidal form with foliage of spray-like appearance. This stately tree is a very hardy specimen and is an easily transplanted conifer which grows well in a variety of soils. Shelter small plants from drying winds. Black-Eyed Susan

The Black-Eyed Susan, ‘Rudbeckia hirta is the most drought tolerant of all the Rudbeckias. The beautiful 2 to 4 inch daisy like flowers are adorned with orange/yellow petals. Black-Eyed Susans bloom for a long time, at least 60 days. Even though grown as an annual, Black-Eyed Susan is technically a short-lived perennial and may come back for a second or third year. They reseed themselves for “naturalized” wildflower areas. Black-Eyed Susans bloom for about 8 weeks starting around mid summer. Black-Eyed susan have a slight preference for alkaline soils that are well drained. They are short lived and should be treated as an annual. Plant in early spring 3 to 4 weeks before the last average frost date. Black-Eyed Susan is excellent for wildflower patches. They provide good fall color; when many perennial and annual flowers are beginning to fade, the Black-Eyed Susan look great.

The Green Smoketree, Cotinus coggygria, is a deciduous shrub/tree. The branches are spreading, loose, and as wide as high. Green Smoketrees have bluish green, sometimes yellow like leaves. Tulip – Fosteriana – Flaming Purissima

The Tulip ‘Flaming Purissima ‘Tulipa fosteriana is a fall planted bulb. These large beautifully shaped flowers stand out from a distance. Bean Pole – Snap – Yard Long

The Bean Pole Liana Yard Long, ‘Phaseolus sesquipedalis has a unique bean/pea flavor of “dow ghok” that is a favorite of the orient. “Good to eat as they are strange to behold”. Liana Yard Long is not really a true bean. Asparagus or Yard Long are grown just like a pole bean, which remind some of asparagus. This plant is easy to grow and almost indestructible. When young, leaves and stems can also be steamed. Yard Long beans are of the sub-tropical origin, but Liana was specifically developed for gardens in North America. The beans are best harvested 12 to 18 inches long, even though they will get 24 inches long. Liana is a pole type plant with vines 6 to 8 feet long. Beautiful purple flowers open in the morning and produce a pair of beans. Plant after the last average frost date. Yard Longs prefer rich, organic, and well drained soil.
